Where to Windsurf in Australia

Looking where to windsurf in Australia? Luckily, Australia is an excellent place to windsurf boasting many windsurfing schools and lessons, shops, and prime locations for beginners. Along with Hawaii, Oregon, and Greece, Australia tops the list as having one of the best environments for windsurfing.

Top Australian Windsurfing Locations

Most of the top windsurfing locations in Australia are on the west coast. Western Australia has a beautiful 12,000 KM coastline and pristine weather all year round, although it can get very windy during the colder months.

If you’re going to Australia on a windsurfing vacation or are visiting to begin windsurfing training, then one of your top choices should be Lancelin. A small town made up largely of fishers, the location has received newfound interest after it was discovered to be an excellent windsurfing location decades ago. The environment is perfect not only for windsurfing experiences, but also for beginners as well. Every year, the town holds the Lancelin Ocean Classic which is the largest windsurfing event in all of Australia.

South of the capital of Western Australia, Perth, is another top location to windsurf in Australia. The Margaret River is a location for expert windsurfers, not suited for beginners. This is because the waters can swell strongly and they require good riding skills to be tamed. The town of Margaret River has a strong culture of sailing of all kinds.

Other spots you might want to consider in Western Australia include Cervantes, the Jurien Bay, and Geraldtown.

New South Wales

However, windsurfers can also find new locations to ride their boards outside of Western Australia, especially in the New South Wales region. Botany Bay and Narrabeen are both excellent locations, but they are mostly for flatwater surfing and/or have shallow waters so this is not for windsurfers who are looking for waves. If you’re a beginner windsurfer searching where to windsurf in Australia, you might want to check out the New South Wales region for better-suited environments for you skill level.
